Night of October 7th 2016
Outside Cardiff Story, The Hayes, Cardiff
Supporters and members of the Home4U team will be sleeping out on the streets of Cardiff on the night of 7th October 2016.
The purpose of the sleep-out is:
• to raise funds for Home4U, a Project that provides temporary accommodation and subsistence money to a small number of people at a time, who would otherwise be destitute.
• to raise awareness of the Government Policy which makes people who are refused asylum destitute.
Many asylum seekers have suffered the effects of brutal conflict, imprisonment, torture or the death of loved ones. In desperation, they leave all that is precious behind them, to seek safety in the UK. Here, they are forbidden to work and have to rely on Home Office Policy.
Current Policy removes accommodation and all support from many people seeking asylum when their application has been refused and their appeal rights exhausted. They are expected to make arrangements to return home, but many are too afraid and for some it is not possible as they are unable to get the necessary documents to do so or there is no safe route.
So they sleep on floors and sofas in the homes of those who will have them: the unluckiest sleep on the street, relying on the kindness of others for food, a place to wash or to leave some belongings.
At Home4U, we try to do something about the plight of these ordinary people who have found themselves in extraordinary circumstances. Home4U offers accommodation and basic essentials – food and toiletries – and we support and encourage them to take what steps they can to move on with their lives.
